There's a quote by Irving Penn on the home page of my website. It says, "A good photograph is one that communicates a fact, touches the heart and leaves the viewer a changed person for having seen it. It is, in a word, effective." I talk a lot about how I want that philosophy to define my work. Effective. That's a great word, right? (I'm a major word geek, by the way.)
I'm learning that in order to be effective in the area of photography, I need to constantly drown out all the noise. You know, NOISE... all the junk that clouds my vision and gets me distracted from the real goal or purpose. It's exhausting, it drains the fun right out of anything. It makes you run down rabbit trails that really have nothing good or helpful at the end. It creeps into any area of our lives, and ultimately causes us to just be... blah.
And, well, blah isn't fun.
I'm getting rid of the noise and relearning why I love photography. I can tell you for sure that it's not because it pays the bills (it doesn't). It's not because I have a goal to book as many sessions as possible (I don't). It's because I love light, I love finding all the ways I can use it to communicate a fact or a story. I love people, and how God makes each person's story different from anyone else. I love that the ordinary really IS extraordinary. That's why I do what I do. And the day I stop thinking these things is the day I'm no longer effective.
I don't know why I seem to have a knack for learning things the hard way. I'm stubborn, I guess.
I want to encourage you to keep pursuing the gifts God has given you. Maybe you sing, or paint, maybe you make meals for the sick people in your community or you make people laugh. Keep doing it! Don't let the noise crowd out the real purpose. God gave you those gifts so that you can glorify Him with them. That's what makes you effective! There's real joy there.
I love this verse, and I often call it to mind when I get frustrated about what I'm doing. It puts it all back into perspective.
"Whoever speaks, let him speak, as it were, the utterances of God; whoever serves, let him do so as by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen." - 1 Peter 4:11
Hope you all have a great week. :)
