2012 was my first year doing photography as a true business. I cannot even begin to describe the emotions, hesitations, joys, frustrations, and learning that occurred in the past year. Starting this business was such a leap of faith for me. I had a general idea of what direction I wanted to pursue, but it didn't fully take shape at first. Although I am still working on logistics and getting the vision in my head into life form, I feel like I have a more grounded sense of where I'm headed. This is what led me to change the face of my business. It's stemming from a firmer grasp on what it means to me, and what I want to offer my clients.
So, why One Sock Pictures?
As I was brainstorming with a friend over names, we discussed what my work represents. And that is, a true-to-life documentation of the lives of the families I work with. A raw look at what it means to be them. As we were throwing names around, I remarked that I should call it One Sock Pictures because my son is constantly walking around with only one sock on, and missing his other sock. After I typed that out to her, it occurred to me that it was perfect. That thought was confirmed when she wrote back, "It's perfect!"
One sock not only describes my son, it describes several areas of my life. I'm always missing one sock to make a match when I wash the laundry. My other son is always forgetting one of his socks at a friend's house, or frantically searching for a sock so we can get ourselves out the door. I frequently pick up a sock in random places of my house and wonder "how in the world did that get there?" When I think of family life and my kids, "one sock" is a pretty good picture!
That's the basis of One Sock Pictures. What does YOUR life look like? What describes your home? I want to strive to capture photos that tell the story, without any words, and make you feel like you are reliving it all over again.
As part of the vision I have for this business, it's important to me that I stick to only shooting what I'm passionate about, where I feel my niche is. That said, OneSock Pictures will be a journalistic style of photography focused solely on families, children, maternity and newborns. I will not be working with high school seniors, engagements, or weddings.
Please be patient with me as I get everything switched over and work on adding photos to the website. I will keep you updated of the changes going on. I will also be posting about the changes to pricing and packaging, and all the details that go along with that.
I want to say thank you to my awesome sister (aka personal graphic designer) for the talent and work she put into designing the logo for me. I'm fortunate she didn't strangle me in the process! I also want to say a huge thank you to all of you who have supported me in the last year. I wouldn't be here without all of you! When I wanted to give up, you encouraged me. When I didn't think it would matter, you gave me another reason to get my camera out. I will continue to grow and learn, and look forward to being a part of your lives in the coming year.
